Dental Implants Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed.

Dental Implants Presentation

What are dental implants?

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. If you compare natural teeth to implant-supported replacement teeth, you’ll see they have the same basic parts. Both have a crown (the visible part used to chew food). Both have a root that holds the tooth securely under the gum and is anchored into the jaw. The difference is that the implant is made of titanium – the same time-tested material used by surgeons for artificial joints. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. To replace the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a small dental implant.

Time is allowed for bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.  A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.

A smiling elderly man

“Don’t be afraid to Smile.”

For years I’d felt like a part of my body was missing — because my teeth were. My dentist told me that dental implants would make me feel and look a lot better. OK, I said. Now, I’m thrilled. I can smile, eat anything, and enjoy a good laugh with my friends.

Surgical Advances in Dental Implants

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Dr. Farren is able to place single stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction – further minimizing your number of surgical procedures.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist.  Dr. Farren performs the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary.  The restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.

This was my first experience with having an implant and from what I heard from family and friends I was not looking forward to having it done but I knew I needed it. Dr. Fallen and everyone in his office explained everything in the process in terms that I could understand. Everyone in Dr. Fallen's office was friendly but more importantly professional. During the whole procedure Dr. Fallen explained everything he was doing and made sure I was not in pain. I would recommend Dr. Fallen and his office to anyone who is considering or has decided to get an implant.

Practically pain free implants, not even an exaggeration. I am actually shocked as to really having no pain since 2 implants 3 days ago. The same for 3 extractions and bone graft in preparation for the implants in January. I had been putting off procedures for years for fear. Doctor Farren and his Surgical assistant Hillary are amazing! Something that had been so dreaded was one of the easiest appointments.

First of all, going to the dentist is my least pleasant thing to do. When I initially made the appt to see Dr Farren for a possible implant(including tooth extraction), I was very apprehensive. However, from the first appt on, every member of the staff and Dr Farren put my mind at ease with their professional, calming and knowledgeable demeanor. As I mentioned above, they answered all my questions and made sure I understood the steps of the procedures. Going to the dentist remains my least favorite but I would highly recommend Great Oaks.

Norma is awesome. She's very friendly and caring. Helped me to be and feel comfortable during my procedure. Debbie is always helpful with scheduling and everything else needed. The whole staff is friendly. Dr. Farren is also great. I had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic and he called a different one in right away and was very helpful during the after hours call.

I had the extraction of a molar, bone grafting and an implant. The procedures were done quickly and pain free. In my 65 years, I have never experienced pain free dentistry done this well. This office uses state of the art medical equipment: such as a hand held x-ray gun and a memory foam examination chair. I can't say enough good things. When you are a patient, you feel like you are in some futuristic office.
