Meet Dr. Kirkwood

Dr. Kirkwood is originally from Ithaca, NY and is the eldest of four children. He received a BS in Microbiology with a minor in Medical Humanities from Davidson College in 2014. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine where he graduated with his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry Degree in 2019. While at Penn he also received honors in Community Oral Health and Medically Complex Care Clinic. As a fourth-year dental student he was also awarded the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Undergraduate Dental Student Award.

He subsequently relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio to complete his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC). He graduated with his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in July 2023 and had the privilege of serving as chief resident during his final year. His training gained him experience in all faucets of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with emphasis on: dentoalveolar surgery, general anesthesia/procedural sedation, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma surgery, surgical and non-surgical management of TMJ disorders, and placement of dental implants. He also had the unique opportunity of completing his pediatric anesthesia training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (CCHMC), currently ranked #1 children’s hospital in the country. Dr. Kirkwood is up to date and maintains certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). He is also board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Kirkwood has publications in the areas of bone grafting and recently co-authored a textbook chapter on orthognathic surgery.  He volunteers his time and has been active in the Relay for Life for several years and has been involved with Mercy Ships. He looks forward to participating in future medical/dental mission trips.

Following the completion of his residency he practiced briefly in the Greater Philadelphia area prior to moving back to upstate NY to join our practice. Dr Kirkwood and his family frequented the Albany area during his childhood and one of his brother’s played hockey at Skidmore College. He fell in love with the area and was excited at the chance to establish his roots here. When not in the office, Dr. Kirkwood enjoys spending time with his family, working out, and exploring new food spots.
